Have you ever seen a two-year-old fall? Or a first grader stumble off their scooter? Generally, they bounce back up and keep moving, though occasionally toddlers will cry to get some sympathy from the adults around them. Kids are so resilient, but they are also careless and don’t really think about what can happen if they jump off the higher part of a bunk bed.
According to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 3 percent of children have been treated with chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation. In other words, for every 100 children you see, there’s a chance that at least three of them have visited a Doctor of Chiropractic at least once in their lives. Chiro.org reports that chiropractic care for children is a common treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, excluding infants, where infantile colic is one of the more common complaints. While chiropractic care is common among young patients, it’s understandable why some people would be hesitant to take their children. There are several reports that have researched that safety of pediatric chiropractic.

Should you take your kids to see a chiropractor?
The ACA also reports that in 2000, a survey found that there were about 30 million pediatric visits to chiropractors and by 2009, that number had risen to 68 million. This fact shouldn’t be too surprising, because children are in fact humans and have bones, though they aren’t as developed in younger children.
In a 2011 review by Matthew Doyle for the ACA, it found that less that one percent of children experienced adverse events from their treatment. Doyle also reported chiropractors have some of the lowest malpractice insurance rates of all primary health care providers in the United States, including medical doctors and osteopaths. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) wrote that parents reported three unexpected improvements with their child's care:
Improved sleeping
Improved behavior and attitude
Improved immune system function
What does pediatric chiropractic care involve?
The first thing a chiropractor will do is ask for a thorough history of a child’s health and ask for the exact reason the parents brought the child in. There is usually a physical examination of the child’s spine. Chiropractors are generally trained to assess pediatric spinal problems, and know how to use their skills to adjust any involved spinal areas in a gentle way. Chiropractic care is personalized to the individual and their spine, and children are not excluded.
The ICPA reports that spinal adjustments for infants and young children involve very light fingertip pressure to correct spinal misalignments. This amount of force used is often no more than a finger touch, which is usually enough to bring back movement to spinal joints that have become locked and are causing interference to normal nervous system functions. According to Pathways to Family Wellness, adjustments will often make a popping sound when the spinal joints are moved, though this is not always heard when children’s spines are adjusted. The use of hand-held instruments, which offer specific and gentle correction, is also used.

How to tell if your child has spinal problems?
A parent might not be able to recognize when a child’s spine is not working correctly, unless their child has an obvious problem. But, there are some signs parents should pay attention because they can indicate spinal problems. These include:
disturbed sleeping patterns
breastfeeding difficulties in the very young
restricted head or neck movement to one side
one shoulder higher than the other
Common childhood disorders can also be linked with spinal dysfunction, these include:
recurrent ear infections
persistent sore throats and colds
colic/reflux
asthma
scoliosis
headaches
bedwetting and/or constipation
growing pains
ADHD
Chiropractors have been taking care of children for more than 100 years. Regular chiropractic checkups for children can identify spinal issues that are a result of physical, chemical and emotional stressors. Chiropractic adjustments have been proven to help to boost function and well-being throughout a child’s lifetime.
